It all began back in 2011. At the time, I was doing my best to transplant aloe vera into a small plot of land in Ndogpassi, Douala.
During the dry seasons, the aloe vera leaves would wither and turn red. I thought they probably needed a bit of shade to thrive.
To provide that shade, I decided to multiply the lemongrass plants that were already growing on the plot.
One day, while visiting the field with a partner, we took time to evaluate our options. It became clear that perhaps it would be wiser to focus more on cultivating lemongrass instead.
And just like that, the aloe vera plot became the lemongrass field.
Then more questions began to emerge… Where did those first lemongrass tufts on the land even come from? Why is it that nearly every family compound in my village has one or several clumps of lemongrass growing nearby?
Whatever the answers may be, today our company PAYIM is cultivating and processing lemongrass on a larger scale. We are rediscovering, day after day, the incredible virtues of this remarkable plant.
